Officials say a Roman Catholic Mass to be held in western Pennsylvania this weekend in solidarity with LGBTQ Catholics has been canceled at the request of the diocese after protesting emails and calls, some of them threatening. The Mass scheduled Sunday at Duquesne University was organized by Pittsburgh-based Catholics for Change in Our Church with the help of LGBTQ outreach ministries. Bishop David Zubik of the diocese of Pittsburgh said protests began after one group promoted it as a ‘Pride Mass’ in conjunction with Pride Month, which he said supports "lifestyle and behavior" that the church couldn't support. He says he asked that the gathering be canceled.

The Denver Nuggets have shown a lot of poise in their first NBA Finals. Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray have led the way as the Nuggets have taken a 3-1 series lead over the Miami Heat. The Nuggets could win the title as early as Monday night when the series resumes in Denver. Jokic is in position to become the first player ever to finish as the NBA's leader in postseason points, rebounds and assists. But he's had a lot of help. And the Nuggets don't care who gets the credit.

Movie director James Cameron says he feels he "walked into an ambush" this week during a visit to Argentina in which he believes there was an attempt to use his image as an environmentalist to give a positive spin to lithium mining operations despite opposition from Indigenous communities. Cameron, the director of "Avatar" and "Titanic," said he would now devote attention and money from his Avatar Alliance Foundation to support Indigenous communities opposing lithium operations. "Ironically, the outcome of this is that I am now aware of the problem and we will now assist through my foundation with the issue of Indigenous rights with respect to lithium extraction," he said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Ted Kaczynski, "the Unabomber," was found dead Saturday at a federal prison in North Carolina, according to national media outlets.

New Haven, Connecticut, has agreed to a $45 million settlement with Randy Cox, who was paralyzed while being transported handcuffed and without a seat belt in the back of a police van last year. New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said Saturday that the agreement was reached following a daylong settlement conference Friday. It came two days after the city fired two police officers who authorities said treated Cox recklessly and without compassion. The settlement resolves a $100 million lawsuit Cox brought against the city and police last year. Five officers face criminal charges in the case. All have pleaded not guilty.

Authorities say heavy rains swept through Pakistan's northwest, causing several houses to collapse and leaving at least 20 people dead and 80 injured. Rains and hail hit the Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Karak districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Saturday. A senior rescue officer says the storm uprooted trees and knocked down electrical transmission towers. Officials were working to provide emergency relief to the injured. Last year, monsoon rains and flooding devastated Pakistan, killing more than 1,700 people and affecting around 33 million people, displacing nearly 8 million. To mitigate the effects of natural disasters, the government in it national budget draft presented Friday allocated $1.3 billion for climate resilience.

NEW YORK — The skies are clear in New York City and across the U.S. Northeast, but the worst fires in Canadian history are still burning so the smoke that drove millions of people indoors this week may still return.

The Champions League final in Istanbul is the biggest test of UEFA's cup final operations since the chaotic and near-fatal title game in Paris last year. UEFA last month detailed an overhaul of its big-game management ahead of its biggest game of the year, with Manchester City playing Inter Milan. UEFA was widely blamed in a scathing report in February into security failures at Stade de France when Real Madrid played Liverpool last year. The changes seemed to be working in Istanbul. Fans traveled on a warm, bustling but calm day to the 72,000-seat Atatürk Olympic Stadium in the western suburbs.

Rome's annual LGBTQ+ Pride parade is winding its way through the Italian capital. This year's version provides a counterpoint to the right-wing national government's crackdown on surrogate pregnancies. Some three dozen floats joined the event on Saturday, including one celebrating the "rainbow families" of same-sex couples. Earlier this year, the government headed by far-right Premier Giorgia Meloni told municipal officials to refrain from recording both members of a same-sex couple as the parent of the child, only the biological parent. Among those who have defied that order was center-left Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, who came to Saturday's parade.

Canadians fighting the wildfires that have sent a hazardous haze over the country's northeast and much of northeastern United States were seeing a glimpse of hope with expectations of favorable weather in the coming days. Officials in the province of Quebec said the next 48 hours will be crucial, with rain forecast for Monday and warmer, humid conditions until then. But Public Security Minister François Bonnardel said authorities are still concerned about Normétal, located 450 miles northwest of Montreal, where fires are burning nearby.

Two people are dead and a third person is injured after a shooting involving a Kansas City police officer Friday night, but few details were immediately available. The shooting happened after a Kansas City, Missouri, officer called for help shortly before 9 p.m. near a McDonald's restaurant on the city's east side. Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Andy Bell says the officers who responded found three of the five occupants of a van had been shot and an officer was nearby. Two of the shooting victims died but their names and ages weren't immediately available. Bell says investigators are working to determine what happened before the officer radioed for help and whether anyone besides the officer fired a gun.

Well-traveled point guard Ish Smith is on his NBA-record 13th different team with the Denver Nuggets. It's proving to be lucky No. 13, too. The Nuggets sit one win away from the franchise's first championship. It hardly matters to Smith that he doesn't play much, because he has the best seat in the house on the bench to encourage his teammates. He's become a quasi-assistant coach and a voice that resonates in the locker room. Game 5 at home on Monday night will be a chance to clinch the series against Miami.

Italy and Uruguay will face off in the Under-20 World Cup final on Sunday with both countries seeking a first title in the tournament. Uruguay is trying to reclaim the trophy for South America after four consecutive European wins, and is hoping to emulate host Argentina's victory at the World Cup in Qatar in December. The match will take place at the Diego Maradona Stadium in La Plata, outside Buenos Aires. Uruguay is playing in the final for the third time while Italy has reached the title game for the first time. Uruguay lost the final in 1997 and 2013.

Japanese teenager Tokito Oda won the French Open wheelchair final to become the youngest man to win a Grand Slam tournament in any discipline and Diede De Groot won the women's final for her 18th major singles title. The 17-year-old Oda was seeded second and beat top-seeded Alfie Hewett of Britain 6-1, 6-4 on Court Philippe Chatrier for his first major title. The International Tennis Federation confirmed Oda's record, which excludes juniors, and listed his age as 17 years, 33 days. De Groot of the Netherlands defeated second-seeded Yui Kamiji of Japan 6-2, 6-0 for her fourth title at Roland Garros.

Nigeria's central bank chief has been arrested hours after he was suspended by the country's new president. Godwin Emefiele has served as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria for the past nine years. Nigeria's Department of State Services said in a statement on Saturday that he was arrested "for some investigative reasons." The central bank chief was suspended from office on Friday night and asked to immediately hand over power to his deputy. Emefiele has been investigated in the past for alleged financial crimes although a judge found no evidence to support the allegations. Analysts say his removal from office was expected. They cited some policies he introduced in recent months which were seen as controversial.

NASCAR's entry for the 24 Hours of Le Mans at last got racing Saturday after NBA superstar LeBron James waved the French flag to start the most iconic sports car race in the world. NASCAR has a special entry in the centenary running of Le Mans as part of its celebration of its 75th season. The car is fielded by Hendrick Motorsports, Chevrolet and Goodyear and features seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson. The effort has been very popular in Le Mans and the car has been dubbed "Le Monster" because of the growl of the V8 engine.

A looks at some of the facts and figures for the 123rd U.S. Open. It will be played at Los Angeles Country Club, a highly regarded course that has never hosted a major. It's the first U.S. Open in Los Angeles in 75 years. And this course is right on the edge of Beverly Hills. It should be a bonus for NBC because it will be aired in prime time.

Spanish forward Brahim Díaz is returning to Real Madrid from AC Milan. The 23-year-old Díaz spent three seasons on loan at Milan. He helped the Italian team win a Serie A title in 2022 and reach the Champions League semifinals this season. Díaz joined Madrid from Manchester City in 2019 but barely played in his single season in Spain's capital. Díaz is the third signing that Madrid has made this month. It has reached a deal with Borussia Dortmund for midfielder Jude Bellingham and bought back left back Fran García from Rayo Vallecano.

The Kurdish-led authority in northeast Syria says hundreds of fighters with the Islamic State group held in prisons around the region will be put on trial after their home countries refused to repatriate them. Saturday's statement from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria called on the United Nations, international rights groups and local organizations to help facilitate the trials. It did not say when or where the trials will be held. The U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, is holding over 10,000 captured IS fighters in around two dozen detention facilities — including 2,000 foreigners whose home countries have refused to repatriate them.

Manchester City is trying to win its first Champions League title. Inter Milan has lifted the trophy three times already. They square off in Istanbul in European club soccer's biggest game. Pep Guardiola's team has won the Premier League title and FA Cup this season. Inter stands in the way of City's treble. The Serie A team has a more storied history in Europe, though this is its first final since winning in 2010. An estimated 450 million viewers are expected to watch from around the world. Among the VIPs at Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadium will be Man City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It's only the second game he's attended since Abu Dhabi's ruling family bought City in 2008.

Here are 10 players who can contend at the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. This will be the first time the North course at LACC hosts a major. It had a Walker Cup in 2017. Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler were still amateurs and on that team. It's also hosted the Pac-12 Championship in 2013. Max Homa set the course record with a 61 that day.

The toughest test in golf takes on several meanings for this U.S. Open. Tough starts with the golf course. Los Angeles Country Club should be all of that. Tough also means traffic. Imagine a U.S. Open on the edges of Beverly Hills between Sunset and Wilshire boulevards. And it's been tough on the USGA. It's premier championship is being overshadowed by the shocking deal that puts the PGA Tour in a partnership with Saudi Arabia's wealth fund. No one is sure what this ultimately means for LIV Golf. And there are more hard feelings than at the previous two majors.

Several soldiers have been overcome by the heat as they turned out in woolen tunics and bearskin hats to salute Prince William. At least three guardsmen fainted during the military parade known as the Colonel's Review. More 1,400 soldiers were reviewed by the heir to the throne, who is honorary Colonel of the Welsh Guards. The temperature in London on Saturday was due to hit 30 Celsius (86 Fahrenheit). Afterwards William tweeted that the troops had done "a really good job" in difficult conditions. Saturday's event was a rehearsal for Trooping the Colour, an annual military parade held each June to mark the monarch's official birthday. King Charles III will oversee the ceremony on June 17.

Erling Haaland says he is feeling the weight of expectations ahead of the Champions League final. But Lautaro Martinez is aiming to complete a spectacular double six months after winning the World Cup with Argentina. They are the players who could make the difference for their respective teams when Manchester City faces Inter Milan at Istanbul's Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadium. Haaland's frank admission is a measure of what is at stake in European club soccer's biggest game. He has appeared to have ice in his veins in his first season at City in which he has scored 52 goals, won two trophies and is now on the brink of leading the club to its first Champions League title.

A bill approved by the state Legislature would move many town and county elections in New York to even-numbered years to synchronize them with state and federal races. Democratic bill sponsors say moving the elections for town supervisor, county executive and other local posts from odd-numbered years would increase voter turnout. Republicans accuse the sponsors of playing politics by moving local elections to years that tend to have higher voter turnout, which could favor Democrats. If approved by Gov. Kathy Hochul, the measure would not affect elections this year. Local officials eventually would have to run for a shortened term to get them on an even-year cycle.

Novak Djokovic has pursued Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for quite some time. They were the guys he measured himself against. The players who established the standards he sought to surpass. Now Djokovic can stand alone atop the men's Grand Slam trophy list for the first time by earning his record 23rd championship in the French Open final on Sunday. Djokovic will be playing in his 34th major title match against Casper Ruud, a 24-year-old from Norway. Ruud was the runner-up at Roland Garros and the U.S. Open last year but still is seeking his first Grand Slam trophy.

Third-seeded Alina Korneeva beat No. 6 Lucciana Perez Alarcon 7-6 (4), 6-3 to win the French Open girls’ title and follow up her success at the Australian Open earlier this year. The 15-year-old Russian player dropped only one set at the Grand Slam tournament as she became the first girl to win two major titles in a season since 2013 and the first girl to win the first two majors of the season since 1990. The 18-year-old Perez Alarcon was the first girl from Peru to reach a junior final. Later, Dino Prizmic of Croatia faced Juan Carlos Prado Angelo of Bolivia in the boys’ final.
